Hopeful for World Cup return
James (hamstring) is eyeing a return this World Cup despite a hamstring injury that has prevented him from training and will leave him out against Panama on Saturday, according to manager Thomas Tuchel, per Henry Winter of the Football Boardroom. "He has a minor hamstring injury. Was not able to train the last two days. He's on an accelerated rehab programme. We take it game by game, but we strongly believe (he will play a part in tournament). It is a bit unlucky. Reece is a key player."
Analysis: James was already known to be out for a match or two after suffering a hamstring injury, and that seems to be further reinforced by his manager's comments. However, they are still optimistic he will return this tournament, although that will heavily depend on whether England can avoid an early upset in the knockouts. The Three Lions will be without a major piece at right-back as he recovers, with Djed Spence or Ezri Konsa likely to now start in his spot.
Will miss at least two games
James (hamstring) is out for Saturday's game against Panama and will miss at least two games, according to David Hytner of The Guardian.
Analysis: Losing James is a huge blow for England since the team doesn't have any other natural right-back to replace him, but it's far from a surprise seeing him go down with a hamstring problem. This is the fifth hamstring injury James has suffered since the beginning of the 2023/24 season, and England's decision not to include another natural right-back on the World Cup roster could prove to be costly based on this unfortunate yet apparently expected outcome. With James set to miss at least two games, Djed Spence could take his place in the XI, but he's a left-back by trade, so he'd be playing on the opposite flank. Ezri Konsa is another option, as the Aston Villa center-back is capable of playing as a full-back if needed, though that would alter the center-back pairing, creating a domino effect on the defensive line. The earliest James will be able to return is the Round of 16 match, providing England goes that far in the tournament.
