Impressive at both ends
Elmali had one cross (zero accurate) and one chance created in Thursday's 3-2 win against USA.
Analysis: Elmali came into the side at left wing back ahead of Ferdi Kadioglu as Turkey made several changes following their tournament exit and delivered at both ends of the pitch. He created two chances and played a strong part in the opening goal, with his involvement leading to the move that ended with Orkun Kokcu's shot being deflected in by Baris Alper Yilmaz, even if the assist was not officially credited to him. He also had one shot himself. Defensively he was equally impressive, winning five of six duels and contributing two tackles, two interceptions, two clearances and one block. A performance that deserved a bigger stage, coming after Turkey had already been eliminated the game before. A complete performance that unfortunately arrived after Turkey's tournament was already over.
Plays 80 minutes in friendly
Elmali (undisclosed) played 80 minutes in Saturday's 2-1 victory over Venezuela, confirming his full fitness ahead of Turkey's World Cup opener on June 13.
Analysis: Elmali had returned to full training earlier in the week after being forced off during Monday's friendly against North Macedonia, and his extended run-out against Venezuela is the clearest sign yet that the left-back is ready to contribute throughout the tournament. Coach Vincenzo Montella will be pleased to have his full complement of defensive options available as Turkey's World Cup preparations enter their final stage.
